In the beginning a loft was the most obvious solution for artists because they want to make the place where they live double as their place of work too. And, the rent was cheap because most lofts then were just warehouses or storage areas converted into one big space and there were none of the creature comforts we know today. Gradually, loft conversions in urban properties became popular despite it being against the law at that time, because it gave extra income to middle class households. Eventually, laws were made to govern the building, regulation and management of lofts.
These days, lofts have become synonymous with the hip lifestyle usually of the modern, single, young couples and professionals. Lofts are no longer the cheap alternative to housing that it used to be, because in the present generation, lofts are no longer products of conversions – they are already being built in small towns and big towns alike.

Small spaces like lofts and condos can make you feel like Gulliver in Lilliput. And with the population increase, coupled with the decrease in land, living spaces are getting smaller. You can still create the illusion of spaciousness and airiness you want, with some of these tips:

Minimize your clutter. If you don’t use it or need it, sell it, throw it or give it away to charity. You can’t afford to have a lot of things lying around, especially in condos where you have limited storage space.
Don’t buy bulky furniture. Naturally, the less space you have, the smaller your furnishings should be. If you must have that big sofa, make sure that the pieces near it are smaller. Also, buying large furniture means less space to maneuver in.
Install custom or built-in closets or shelves to maximize your space. Use every inch of your space, think outside the box! Installing shelves and wall-hung systems also frees your floor from clutter.

But as with any room design, there are basic principles which can remove the mystery from designing a great loft. Follow these basic guidelines for a traditional loft look with a twist.

• Choose your anchor color by going to your local home improvement store and browsing the paint swatches. You do not necessarily have to paint the loft this color, you are simply choosing a favorite shade that both soothes and inspires you. Pick a contrasting accent color as well and hold onto your paint swatch sample cards.
• Remember that classic loft decor includes a stark coat of light colored paint on the walls to create a base for subtle color splashes. But if you would like to keep up with the most current trends in loft design, pick an accent wall and paint it a bold color. As a general rule, the best wall to paint an accent color is going to be the wall containing the majority of the room’s windows, or the wall directly opposite the window wall.

This is why lofts are now very popular. It is a combination of commercial-type spaces on the ground floor of a building and then followed by rows and rows of residential units on top. This will enable people to eat, sleep, live and work on the same space to prevent being bothered by traveling long distances everyday.
